The Messiah did not come to destroy the TORAH. Mat 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.1 I did not come to destroy but to complete. Mat 5:18 “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done. Mat 5:19 “Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens. Mat 5:20 “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall by no means enter into the reign of the heavens. No man or woman is authorized to add to or subtract from inspired scriptures.
Deu 4:2 “Do not add to the Word which I command you, and do not take away from it, so as to guard the commands of יהוה your Elohim which I am commanding you. MAIN SCRIPTURES FOR THIS TOPIC Lev 19:26 ‘Do not eat meat with the blood. Do not practise divination or magic. Lev 19:27 ‘Do not round the corner of your head, nor destroy the corner of your beard. Lev 19:28 ‘And do not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor put tattoo marks on you. I am יהוה. Lev 21:1 And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aharon, and say to them: ‘No one is to be defiled for the dead among his people, Lev 21:2 except for his relatives who are nearest to him: for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother; Lev 21:3 and for his maiden sister who is near to him, who has had no husband – for her he is defiled. Lev 21:4 ‘A leader does not defile himself among his people, to profane himself; Lev 21:5 they do not make any bald place on their heads, and they do not shave the corner of their beard, and they do not make a cutting in their flesh. Lev 21:6 ‘They are set-apart to their Elohim and do not profane the Name of their Elohim, for they bring the offerings of יהוה made by fire, and the bread of their Elohim, and shall be set-apart. LEVITICUS 19:27 Lev 19:27 ‘Do not round the corner of your head, nor destroy the corner of your beard. (a) CORNERS The Hebrew word used is pe’ah which means direction, region, end, side. In this context it means border, lining or egde. To understand this well we need to read Leviticus 19:9 about corners of a field Lev 19:9 ‘And when you reap the harvest of your land, do not completely reap the corners of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Corners in Leviticus 19:9 means a specific area. It does NOT apply to the WHOLE field. Those that take the word corner to be the whole beard will get Leviticus 19:9 wrong as they will mistranslate it to mean an entire field and that to harvest a field is breaking this law. Pe’ah does not mean the whole field and hence the corners are outside borders of a FIELD that are not to be harvested while the rest of the field can be harvested. Therefore, pe’ah in scriptures refers to a specific area or region and not to the whole. (b) MAR The Hebrew word used is Shachath which means destroy, ruin, spoil, corrupt or waste. It means complete destruction. Trimming the BEARD does not reflect the meaning of marring (Shachath). Proper trimming does not destroy the corners (edges, lining, and borders) of a beard or head. Lev 21:5 they do not make any bald place on their heads, and they do not shave the corner of their beard, and they do not make a cutting in their flesh. Read I Peter 2:5, 9 LEVITICUS 19:27 DOES NOT SAY: (a) Do not trim your beard (b) Only keep long beard (c) Trimming a beard is destroying it (d) A man cannot trim his beard and sideburns at all (e) A man should let his beard grow long and in whatever direction (f) A man should not maintain his beard (g) It is wrong for a man to cut his hair short LEVITICUS 19:27 DOES SAY (a) Do not destroy the sides, corners, edges, borders or lining of your beard and head BODY MODIFICATION IS OF PAGAN ORIGIN The forbidden pagan practices in Leviticus 19:26-28 are unnatural acts against the human body which was created in the image of YHWH (e.g. tattoes, goatees, piercing, cutting the flesh, weird haircuts).
Believers must learn to think scripturally and not swayed by society (John 5:24, Isaiah 5:20). The world hates scriptural masculinity and war has been declared against any form of scriptural masculinity like the beard. DOCTRINES & COMMANDMENTS OF MEN Mar 7:5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your taught ones not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” Mar 7:6 And He answering, said to them, “Well did Yeshayahu prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it has been written, ‘This people respect Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. Mar 7:7 And in vain do they worship Me, teaching as teachings the commands of men.’ Mar 7:8 “Forsaking the command of Elohim, you hold fast the tradition of men.” Mar 7:9 And He said to them, “Well do you set aside the command of Elohim, in order to guard your tradition. With respect to this topic, this is referring to FALSE interpretations including those that make something like a beard as an IDOL. One such teaching is the teaching that it is a sin to TRIM a beard, and such are following the traditions of men and are twisting (adding or subtracting, corrupting, etc.) the true commandments concerning beards. They twist the true meaning of Leviticus of 19:27. PLUCKING OF OR SHAVING OFF A BEARD The shaving of a beard was done only in connection with: (a) Sign of mourning, grief, judgment, humility, conquest or enslavement Ezra 9:3, Isaiah 15:2, Jeremiah 48:37, Ezekiel 5:1 Death of a relative; Leviticus 21:1-3 (b) Sign of Shame/ Indignity Isaiah 50:6, 2 Samuel 10:4-5, I Chronicles 19:4-5, Genesis 41:14 (c) Purification of leprosy (e.g. leprosy infection on heard) Leviticus 14:8-9, Leviticus 13:33 (d) Special vows – completion of a Nazarite vow Numbers 6:2, 9, 13; 18:2, Acts 18:18; 21:23-24 BEARD
A man may choose to have a long beard or to trim his beard to a shorter length. Beard length is personal preference. Men having long beards should NOT condemn those that have short beards, and men having short beards should NOT condemn those that have long beards. Leviticus 19:27 does not mean man keeping long hair and long beard but about maintaining the corners, edges and borders of the head and beard. 1Co 11:14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man indeed has long hair, it is a disrespect to him? 1Co 11:15 And if a woman has long hair, it is an esteem to her, because the long hair has been given to her over against a veil. This scripture does not say women are forbidden from cutting their hair but that they should have long hair as their head covering. They can from time to time cut their hair not leaving it short but long enough as a covering. (Example: Luke 7:38 & John 12:3) YHWH has commanded men to maintain short hair. Lev 21:5 they do not make any bald place on their heads, and they do not shave the corner of their beard, and they do not make a cutting in their flesh. Eze 44:20 “And their heads they shall not shave, nor shall they let their hair grow long – they shall keep their hair well trimmed. Beard was part of YHWH’s design and was given to man before the fall. YHWH ADORNED men with a beard which was part of YHWH’s order of creation. Every man has a beard naturally or by creation. It is part of the way YHWH chose to represent His own image in the outward appearance of man. Read I Corinthians 11:7-12, 14-15 To change the beard through destroying the corners is to change the way YHWH created man. The beard is part of the distinction between a man and a woman (Deuteronomy 22:5). It is a mark of masculinity and also maturity from boyhood to adulthood. The following had beards: (a) The Messiah Read Isaiah 50:6, I peter 2:21 (b) Aaron the High Priest Read Psalm 133:2 (c) David the King Read I Samuel 21:13 (d) Ezra the Scribe Read Ezra 9:3 A beard being a sign of the following it is also a private and public testimony: (a) Submission & Separation to YHWH Read Leviticus 19:27; 21:5-6 (b) Blessing Psalm 133 (c) Slave to man when completely shaven as a slave POINTS TO NOTE 1. “There is nothing spiritual about having a shaggy, long beard that looks unruly”. Some consider this as a mark of spirituality Joh 7:24 “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” 2. “YHWH did not want His priests to have carved designs, and unnatural shapes made in their hair and beards” 3. “Nowhere in the TORAH are sons of Yisrael ever told that they MUST never cut their hair or trim their beards” 4. Hair and beard should be clean and well looked after 5. A beard is not prohibited in the Word of YHWH but rather it is commended.
