Proverbs 24:30-34 says, “I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; and there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down. When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction: A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest; So shall your poverty come like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.” If you have noticed laziness in your life or you see it setting in, there are two things that you need to consider in this passage that should spark a light of wisdom in you. They are the CAUSE and EFFECT of Laziness. The cause is SLEEP, SLUMBER and FOLDING OF THE HAND. These represent a life of procrastination, self-indulgence and lack of self motivation. A little sleep here and there when you ought to be working (even at times burning the midnight oil) is an indication that you cannot discipline yourself to achieve your life goals and targets. A little sleep is a life given over to the domineering effect of the flesh. You can’t discipline your eyes, your body and your appetite and say NO, I have a goal to reach. Folding of the hand is the greatest wickedness to your destiny. A FOLDED HAND IS A FOLDED DESTINY. Such hand will not reach out to anything great in life. The next is the EFFECT. And it is simple too – POVERTY. Because this man would not keep awake and open his hands to WORK, his vineyard, his means of livelihood and source of prosperity are “all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down.” Poverty is the cheapest thing that can come upon a man once you refuse to labour with your hand a brain. The hand you ought to use to cultivate your destiny is FOLDED and the EYES you need to watch over your God given inheritance and nurture it to fruition is sleeping all the time – no prayer, no vigil, no diligence, no supervision, no surveillance. God did not intend poverty for his hard working and trusting children, who follow the biblical principles of success. Poverty is for SLEEPERS and HAND-FOLDERS. I charge you to WAKE UP today. You are meant for success. Never cheat your destiny. Never go below the best for your life. OPEN YOUR EYES and let your hands be free to WORK. A woman who was apparently amazed by the success of Thackeray, one of the most outstanding literary luminaries England ever knew made this comment to a lord, over a dinner, “It is really surprising Thackeray woke up one morning and found himself famous.” The lord then replied, “When that morning dawned, Thackeray had been writing 8hrs a day for fifteen years! No madam, the man who wakes up and finds himself famous hasn’t been asleep.”
