Psalm 32:8-9 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you.” There are three important things here I want us to see. First, God is ready to instruct us in our lives’ journey and teach us which way to go at every point of need or confusion. That’s his work as our faithful SHEPHERD. Secondly, he is ready to teach and guide us on the way we should go. It is one thing to point a man to a direction; it is another to watch whether he follows through to his destination, unharmed and without derailing. God said he is not just willing to tell us the way; he is ready to ESCORT us on the way. The third issue relates to our response to this magnanimity of our loving SHEPHERD. He warns us, “Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle…” The imagery of a horse and mule here is quite significant to our understanding of this warning. The horse and the mule have certain characteristics. From my findings, they lack discretion as to who jumps on them or what nature of burden you put on them. Someone contrasted the Mule and the horse in this way: While the horse is fierce and rash, the mule is slothful or lazy. The horse in his fierceness and rashness would not submit to his owner if it breaks its leg. As you put the bones together, he flies out and breaks it again, because he thinks your binding of his broken leg is another fetter. So, you have to put bit and bridles on the two animals to control, force them to do some things or retrain them from doing some things, including biting you who is trying to help them. What does this mean to us as believers? God warned, “Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding.” God is simply saying, don’t be foolish. Don’t be rash. Don’t be too fast or too slow. Listen to my instruction and follow my guidance. Don’t be undiscerning so much that anybody will just jump on you or place a burden on you that I don’t intend for you. Listen to me alone. God is saying be patient with me as I deal with you and I lead you gently on the journey of your destiny. Don’t be like a horse or a mule which I will have to put a bridle on to control. You are supposed to be like a baby that the mother wants to carry and he opens his arms. Check your life today. Is this how ready you are for God to lead you on life’s journey? If you have been like a horse or a mule before, it is time for you to repent and say “Lord, I surrender ALL. Please have your way.”
