SOME KEY TRAITS OF THE LEADERS WE NEED IN OUR NATION The book of Judges Chapter nine reveals some negative traits of a king in Israel known as Abimelech. However, these same scriptures also help us ENVISION the kind of leaders we should have. Here are some positive traits we should expect in our leaders:- [1.] Leaders whose main support base is not from their tribesmen. They have values and qualities which give them UNIVERSAL SUPPORT from every part of our country. Judges 9:1-3 – (NLT) – One day Gideon’s[a] son Abimelech went to Shechem to visit his uncles—his mother’s brothers. He said to them and to the rest of his mother’s family, “Ask the leading citizens of Shechem whether they want to be ruled by all seventy of Gideon’s sons or by one man. And REMEMBER THAT I AM YOUR OWN FLESH AND BLOOD!” So Abimelech’s uncles gave his message to all the citizens of Shechem on his behalf. And after listening to this proposal, THE PEOPLE OF SHECHEM DECIDED IN FAVOR OF ABIMELECH BECAUSE HE WAS THEIR RELATIVE. [2.] Leaders who don’t buy support but they ATTRACT support. Leaders whose key advisors and followers are not hired worthless and reckless people. Judges 9:4 – So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, with which Abimelech HIRED WORTHLESS and RECKLESS MEN; and they followed him. [3.] Leaders who are elected in TRUTH and SINCERITY. Judges 9:16 – “Now therefore, if you have ACTED IN TRUTH and SINCERITY in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him as he deserves… [4.] Leaders who are qualified and COMPETENT. Judges 9:7-15, is an analogy about the hierarchy of trees. According to the analogy, the Cedars of Lebanon are the most senior in rank and the thorn trees are the least in rank among trees. Also from the analogy we learn that “qualified and productive trees” shy away from positions of authority which creates a vacuum that is filled by thorn trees. Also, thorn trees use violence as a strategy of ascending to positions of authority and they love to attack cedars trees. Judges 9:14-15 – [This is after some trees invited to lead declined] “Then all the trees said to the bramble [thorn], ‘You come and reign over us!’ And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me as king over you, Then come and take shelter in my shade; But if not, LET FIRE COME OUT OF THE BRAMBLE And devour the cedars of Lebanon!’ Decree: In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we decree that “the cedars of Lebanon” [God ordained leaders] have the courage and confidence to step out of their comfort zones and accept the call to leadership in our Nation. Amen.
