•UNITY OF THE SPIRIT• The unity of the Spirit is really a wonderful, awe-inspiring, and dynamic issue. It is because of how it defies earthly wisdom of logic, how God could distribute just one Spirit among millions of believers- not putting in Himself, Christ, and all other heavenly hosts. Apostle Paul wrote: ‘There is one body (we, the church), one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all’ EPH. 4:4-6. This shows brethren, that there are certain aspects of God’s spirituality that do not have duplicates, such as the Ones listed above-any duplicate therefore, of any of these would be a counterfeit. Now, we have heard and read about how the prophecies of God had come to pass in one instance or the other. How prophecies, unlimited by time, are spoken hundreds of years before they happen. And true to that, these prophecies really happened as prophesied through the Spirit of God working in the prophets. What really worked for these prophecies, to be insightful as a Christian, is the unity of the Spirit being only one and unchanging, whether today, yesterday, or for ever (HEB. 13:8). To be clear, what I mean is that practically, the Holy Spirit present thousands of years in Isaiah to have prophesied the coming of Christ, was the same Spirit present when Christ came. This Holy Spirit transcended all those years for it to have alighted like a dove on Jesus Christ when He was baptized (MAT. 3:16-17). That was the reason Apostle Paul testified in 2COR. 4:7 that the transcendent power (the ability to be present at all times and in all places) belongs to God (Apostle Paul also, occupying the same Spirit, was able to write so). So, the Spirit is one, as testified by Apostle Paul in EPH. 4:4. To canvass well the oneness of the Spirit, I would like to introduce you to a certain prophecy of Jeremiah “acted” through the Spirit by men of God, and in the same way carried out in action by certain men in the Book of Matthew. Yes, “action” brethren, not only words this time, to show well how effective and dynamic the Spirit of God is. Jeremiah, while being a prisoner in the hands of Zedekiah, the then king of Judah, as a result of the doom he prophesied upon Judah, the Word of the Lord came to Him (JER. 32:6-15). What the Lord said was that Hanamel who was Jeremiah’s cousin, would come to him in the court of guard where he was being imprisoned to sell a field to Jeremiah saying: “Buy my field which is at Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours”. That is, brethren, the right of our redemption by purchase is ours. For it has been instituted by God through Christ who was betrayed. And as it is contained in MAT. 27:9-10, the money Judas Iscariot, one who betrayed Jesus, collected for treachery was actually used to buy a field-the potter’s field (The Field of Blood). MAT. 27:9-10: ‘Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him (Jesus) on whom a price has been set by some of the sons of Israel, and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed them” ‘. Through all these actions brethren, the right of purchase for redemption has been given to all men through Christ’s betrayal that later led to His crucifixion, where He suffered for our sins. And what is that right of purchase we have for redemption? That is our faith brethren. As the same Spirit of God working in all these led Apostle Paul to write: “The righteous (the redeemed) shall live by faith” ROM. 1:17; 5:1-2; EPH. 2:8-9; JOHN 3:16. This further ascertains the words of Hanamel who God led to sell the field: “Buy my field which is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours (for all who choose to believe); buy it for yourself (all men are urged to have faith in Christ so as to be redeemed and possess the Spirit of God)’. Back to the prophecy of Jeremiah. After Jeremiah bought this field, He did four things that are significant in Christ’s saving grace. Firstly, Jeremiah was led to sign the deed, the written agreement containing ownership and possession of redemption. In this case, Jeremiah as a prophet, was led to represent God in how God laid out and signed the covenant (new covenant) He instituted with man through Christ (MAT. 28:26-29). Apostle Paul in HEB. 6:9-20, elaborated on this well, how God confirmed (signed) the new covenant through two things: by swearing and making an oath with Abraham. HEB. 6:17-20 says: ‘So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of promise (the believers) the unchangeable character of His purpose, He interposed with an oath (after swearing by Himself (HEB. 6:13-16)), so that through two unchangeable things (swearing and oath), in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the (sure) hope set before us.
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf (our intercessor)…’. As you well know that the signature of a man bears the irrevocable mark of the man, making whatever he has signed an evident part of Him, so as God signed the new covenant of redemption, making it irrevocable; making it a sure one. Secondly, Jeremiah was led to seal the deed. By sealing, it further proves the irreversible nature of this redemptive new covenant founded through Christ. As Apostle Paul wrote: ‘In Him (Christ) you also, who have heard the Word of truth, the gospel of your redemption, and have believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the guarantee of our (right of) inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory’ EPH. 1:13-14. To show more further the irreversible will of God, He benevolently sealed us with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee. The third thing Jeremiah was led to do was to get witnesses in the court of guard where he was. JER. 32:12: ‘…and I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch…, in the presence of Hanamel my cousin, in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, and in the presence of all the Jews who were sitting in the court of the guard’.
Brethren, this simply shows how many people were witnesses to the new covenant-the disciples of Christ, the prophets, David…even we believers, for we are the present living witnesses (1COR. 15:3-8, 1JOHN 1:2-4; ACTS 2:2). All these were done to further ratify the sureness of this covenant and to show that it is meant for all, as long as that person choose to believe in the High Priest-Jesus. Lastly, Jeremiah, by the Spirit, weighed the money used in purchasing the field. Brethren, as things are weighed to know their units, weight, importance, so was the new covenant weighed for the level of significance.
Apostle Paul helped weigh the covenant by making us know who Christ, the main actor of the covenant, the money used in purchasing is. He wrote about Him: ‘Consequently He is able for all time to save those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priests, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above heavens. He has no need…to offer sacrifices daily…He did this when He offered (sacrificed) up Himself…The Word of the oath (made by God, and backed up by His swearing)…appoints a Son Who has been made perfect for ever’ HEB. 7:25-28 (HEB. 9:11-14). This shows the importance of this present covenant, that it is one of a kind and matchless in significance, because Him through which it was established is pure, perfect; He did it once for all. In His person, the fullness of God Himself was pleased to dwell (COL. 1:19). After all these, God told Jeremiah through the Spirit to tell Baruch whom the deed was entrusted in his care: ‘Take these deeds, both this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware vessel, that they may last for a long time. To further show the unity of the Spirit that traverses time. Apostle Paul wrote in the exact word sense in 2COR. 4:7: ‘We have this treasure (the new covenant signed by God, sealed with the Holy Spirit, witnessed by all righteous souls, and with much importance attached to it) in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us’. Brethren, check all these things yourself and testify to the unity of the Spirit that travels through time to act. Reading wholly this message, you would think Prophet Jeremiah, he who the Spirit led to prophesy, was having a conversation with Apostle Paul, he who the Spirit led to interpret. There are direct correlations between them. Yet, the men never even saw each other. But actually, why should it be needed for the two to see each other when they had the same Spirit that worked well in both of them? Since they had the same Spirit, it only stands to reason that they could communicate through ages. Apostle Paul Himself wrote to attest to this: ‘There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same Lord Who inspires them all in every one’ 1COR. 12:4-6. This stands to say brethren, that as believers, we share the same Spirit, because we believe in the same Lord through the same Christ, all acquired through the same faith, setting before us the same hope of resurrection.
For this reason Apostle Paul wrote: ‘Rather, speaking truth in love, we are to grow in every way into Him Who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body (the church-me, you, and every other believer), joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and up-builds itself in love’ EPH. 4:15-16. THE GRACE OF THE LORD IN CHRIST BE WITH YOU (AMEN).
