In this piece, we will be looking at recession in contemporary times and what the
attitude of the Christian should be.
In the layman’s language, recession is generally a time of famine, loss of jobs,
skyrocketing prices of goods and services and basic essential commodities as a
result of bad prevailing economic circumstances. It is not new as it dates back even to Bible times ( Gen. 12:10; Gen. 26:1 ). Remember, it was famine that eventually
drove Jacob and his children to settle in Egypt. During this time, people are
generally advised to be careful in spending, save more to be able to withstand
future eventualities.
For a real Christian, while it is good to be careful with your expenditure at this time,
it is important to say here that ultimately God is your source. The Bible says in the book of Philippians:
Philippians 4:19 KJV
[19] But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ
Your survival and sustenance at this time is not because you are a shrewd saver, or
that you are too careful, but because you are a child of covenant and nothing more being a Christian.
Your survival does not depend on the economy of where you reside, but on the
abundant economy of God. The book of Job says:
Job 22:29 KJV
[29] When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall
save the humble person. You must be mindful of your confessions at this time, as negative confessions will
land you into fear and difficulties. Yes we know, things may be generally tight, but
continue confessing positively that your case is different and God will make it so.
Genesis 26:1-3,12-14 KJV
[1] And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days
of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. [2] And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the
land which I shall tell thee of: [3] Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and
will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I
will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; [12] Then Isaac
sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord
blessed him. [13] And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great: [14] For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds,
and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
This is a time to be hard working, and prayerful to know what God is saying to you.
Engage in some good venture that God will see and bless the work of your hands.
