Sleep is desirable and is recommended highly by medical scientists. It is essential
for body repair, growth and development and also helps for good metabolism. The
natural sleep is a state of suspension of consciousness; it is a state of inactivity in
which case the individual is unprepared and can be taken unawares.
Having explained what natural sleep is, we will go further to look at sleep from the spiritual perspective. Whilst natural sleep is desirable, spiritual sleep is not.
Spiritual sleep is therefore a state of backsliding; it is akin to spiritual compromise
and sin. It is like giving place to the devil and opening doors for him to establish a
foothold on the individual’s life ( Ephesians 5:27 ). It is a state of lukewarmness
and insensitivity to spiritual things.
Spiritual sleep for a Christian is dangerous. Christians need to be alert and prepared at all times. The coming of the Lord shall be sudden; as a result we need
to be alert so that we are not caught unawares. Spiritual sleep is also a state of
inactivity in the Church of God ( body of Christ ). The main purpose of salvation for
every believer, is for you to serve in His vineyard. You are saved to also bring
others to Christ. It is therefore unacceptable for a Christian to remain at ease in
Zion ( the Church of God ). Amos 6:1 KJV
[1] Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria,
which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
Just imagine God our Father, if He were to sleep and lose consciousness, the devil
would have made a mincemeat of us. The Bible says that He neither slumbers nor
sleeps. He is spiritually awake all the time knowing that the devil moves about like a roaring lion seeking whom to devour. (1 Peter 5:8 ).
Psalm 121:4 KJV
[4] Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
As Christians we are called to watch and pray. That is alertness!!
Mark 13:35-37 KJV
[35] Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: [36] Lest coming
suddenly he find you sleeping. [37] And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
When men sleep, the enemy sees an opportunity to perform his evil machinations,
in their lives, in the church, in families, in towns, in countries etc. This is why we
must abstain from every appearance of evil, be very prayerful, and study the word
of God continuously. Matthew 13:24-28 KJV
[24] Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is
likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: [25] But while men slept,
his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. [26] But
when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares
also. [27] So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? [28] He said unto
them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we
go and gather them up?
The parable of the ten virgins is a very good illustration. The scriptures say that
“while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept” ( Matt. 25:5 ). May this
not be your portion. May revival come into your heart as you meditate on this piece. May we like the Christians at Thessalonica heed the advise of Apostle Paul which
1 Thessalonians 5:6 KJV
[6] Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
